Search Hints
Hints for Searching Maryland's National Register Database
Property Name
Enter a name or partial name, and all properties that contain that text will be returned. The search is not case sensitive. Enter the smallest part of the name possible in order to increase your chances for success. For example, "Principio Furnace" goes by the name "Principio Ironworks," so entering "Principio" would produce a successful return. Also, the word "Mount" may be abbreviated as "Mt." in the official name. To search for lighthouses, use only the word "Light" (there are also light stations).
Leaving the "county name" blank in the drop-down box will search the entire state.
Location
The city/town search will yield reliable results for cities and larger towns such as Frederick, Hagerstown, Cambridge, etc., but will not necessarily produce expected results for small towns due to variation in the records.
To locate a property by street address, select the county if known and type in the name of the street only. Do not enter a street number or the words "street," "road," etc.
Many properties are not listed by street address, and will not be located by this means.
If you know the general location of a property, you can search the county maps.
Leaving the "county name" blank in the drop-down box will search the entire state.
Keyword(s)
The keyword search will search the capsule summaries (two paragraphs consisting of a site description and a discussion of site significance). The search will only support a single string search (i.e., it will not accept Boolean expressions including AND or NOT). The search is not case sensitive. Use this search for architectural styles, architects and builders, resource types, themes, etc.
When viewing the information on the properties returned, use the browser navigation (Edit/Find on this Page) to search on the page for the "hit."
Leaving the "county name" blank in the drop-down box will search the entire state.
